Why You Should Have Your Gas Boiler Serviced Annually
Gas boilers provide you with heat in the winter and hot water year round. What do you provide it in return?
It may just seem to be a box in a closet, but the gas boiler contains parts designed to work in harmony; an Annual Gas Boiler Service will keep them in concert.
What Happens In There?
The Gas Service provided to your building is connected to the Gas Boiler. There is a gas valve which will permit or stop the flow of the gas. If your Gas Boiler has a standing pilot, then there will be a thermocouple in that pilot. If the pilot goes out, the gas valve will not allow gas to flow. Some Gas Boilers use a direct spark system with no need for a standing pilot.
The thermostat is what keeps the water at the correct temperature, by opening or closing the gas valve which feeds the gas to the main burner. If for some reason the thermostat were to stick, a high limit safety is designed to close the gas valve.
Then there is the flue. It may appear to just be a metal pipe, but actually it is engineered to allow the byproducts of combustion to egress from the building; while simultaneously preventing wind from becoming a downdraft and blowing out the flame. Again, some gas boilers utilize a fan as a power draft system, and may have a metal vent or even PVC if it is a condensing gas boiler.
Why Should I Have It Serviced?
While a gas service may seem to be a place to trim the budget, beware. Modern gas boilers have redundant safeties, but without proper maintenance, the chances of multiple parts failing are increased.
A worn out flue or faulty power draft system can allow carbon monoxide to accumulate in the building.
If the thermostat or limit failed closed or the gas valve stuck open, you would have a runaway burner continuously firing. Or on the other hand, it could shut down on a cold night and leave you without heat.
The gas piping itself should be checked to make sure there are no leaks, which would allow gas to escape and enter the building.
What About The Cost?
An annual gas boiler service is not free admittedly. However when a gas boiler is properly adjusted, it can actually reduce the energy usage, reducing the cost of your gas service bill. Not to mention providing the peace of mind, knowing the unthinkable won't occur.
When Should It Be Done?
At a minimum, the gas boiler should be inspected and serviced on an annual basis. Keep in mind that winter is the busier season, often you can get a better deal by having the service done during the warmer part of the year.

The Battery and the Boiler $34.06 And what sort of work, it may be asked, can this volatile fellow perform? We cannot tell all -- the list is too long. Let us consider a few of them. If we fabricate tea-pots, sugar-basins, spoons, or anything else of base metal, he can and will, at our bidding, cover the same with silver or yellow gold. If we grow dissatisfied with our candles and gas, he will, on being summoned and properly directed by the master minds to whom he owns allegiance, kindle our lamps and fill our streets and mansions with a blaze of noonday splendor. If we grow weary of steam, and give him orders, he will drive our tram-cars and locomotives with railway speed, minus railway smoke and fuss. |

Boiler Explosion $81.25 Boiler explosions are catastrophic failures of boilers. As seen today, boiler explosions are of two kinds. One kind is overpressure in the pressure parts of the steam and water sides. The second kind is explosion in the furnace. Boiler explosions of pressure parts are particularly associated with steam locomotives. Locomotive boilers are of a construction with a very small handfed furnace, a boiler barrel containing boiling water under pressure, and tubes containing hot gases from the fire. In these, the latter type of explosion from the furnace side is practically unknown. There can be many different causes, such as failure of the safety valve or corrosion of critical parts of the boiler. Corrosion at the edges of lap joints was a common cause of early boiler explosions.
