Raleigh Heating and Air Conditioning: Troubleshooting Problems
Everyone is going to experience trouble with their heating and cooling systems at some point in time. The older the system, the more probable it is that some aspect will require repairs in the near future. If you're not sure what to do you can call your local company to assist you in your time of need.
An honest contractor will be happy to help you troubleshoot the problem and guide you to a possibly faster solution than waiting for someone to come out and look things over on site. In order to avoid paying unnecessary service charges, you can check for minor issues and correct them on your own.
Your Air Conditioner Isn't Working
You turn on your air conditioner and notice that the air that is blowing isn't cold or getting any cooler after running for a couple of hours. First, you should check the setting on your thermostat. It's easy to forget to switch the setting to ‘cool' after it's been on ‘hot' for a number of months and make sure the temperature is set lower than the temperature of the room.
Another simple remedy can be to make sure that the registers are able to provide air. Check each one and see if there is anything blocking the opening, like furniture or carpet, or even if they are open all of the way.
Your Heat is not coming on
Just like troubleshooting for your air conditioner, you can start in the same place by first checking your thermostat and making sure it's been set to ‘heat' and the temperature is above room temperature. Be sure that the furnace fan is running by turning on the gas. If the fan isn't running you should check the breaker and the fuse before checking for any loose wiring connections.
If your furnace utilizes a standing pilot make sure it is lit and the main burners come on. If the side of the furnace is cool to the touch the problem could be with the furnace control board, thermostat or with the gas valve. You can continue by checking other components of your furnace such as the flame sensor and the pilot assembly which could both be dirty.
Your Troubleshooting Isn't Producing Results
Contact your local heating and cooling repair company and explain the problem you're having and all that you've done to try to correct it. Your contractor will ask you some questions to better assess the situation and will provide more possible solutions according to what you have described.
Hopefully the remedy will be simple, but if not, the contractor will have to come and service your unit. You should be provided with a thorough inspection and a full explanation of what is required to get your heat working or your air conditioner running properly.
Performing simple troubleshooting techniques when a problem arises with your heat or air conditioner can often result in a solution. However, it's good to know that there is service available when the problem requires a qualified professional.
